Tuba Christmas Pioneer Courthouse Square

this is an amazing photo by Benjamin Brink of the Oregonian. that's Pioneer Courthouse Square reflected in the rim of the tuba. i think this is the coolest photo i've seen in a long time. Happy Belated Thanksgiving you guys!

Image of the Year 2006

i saw this picture on the front cover of the New York Times in August of this year and it has been ingrained in my mind since then. never have i seen such joy, relief, sorrow and exhaustion mingled so intensely on camera film. these soldiers made it over the border just in time for their lives to be spared. Up the Irons :-)

Hi guys!

Just wanted to let you guys know that im doing great and say hi!
In theory this time should be spent on my history essay about the early colonization from a british point of view! Mayflower and all.. I actually dont know that much about it, but it will all work out I hope!

Up the Irons! - I went to see Iron Maiden play in Copenhagen a week ago or so! Its was okay - The sound was horrible, but they played awesome! A lot of the new stuff ( which i unlike alot of other people like) and some old stuff as well! It was deffinately a night to remember...

Otherwise i dont have that much to say... Unfortunately it looks like its going to be hard to make a reunion.. Everybody are so busy - incl. myself..

For those of you who dont know Iron Maiden here are some youtube links :)

the tally so far

sorry if it seems i've been aloof this week. i haven't. just a little distracted. Carl, how are you feeling? a 100% better? and by the way, i love the idea of you posting pics of your world. i would love that. i would love if all of you guys did that!

and Dori, how are your parents doing? is everything back to normal? how did your finals go?

so i wanted to post a tally so far of what people are thinking about the reunion:

* Carl - europe
* Dori - mid december to mid january or after mid may
* La Portes (Heidi & Marc) - maybe june, maybe colorado, maybe oregon, maybe europe
* Sam - can't do summer or immediately around christmas
* Swansons (Shawna & Andy) - they said we are more than welcome in minnesota, or canada! they could possibly do colorado, oregon, christmas break (26th - 2nd), spring break (march 29th - april 8th), or summer break (june 11th - september 4th)
* vander Laans (Tine & Andy) - sound pretty busy around christmas and new years, they said they'll post something soon though

where are the rest of ya'll at???

The Boy and the Dog are Sleeping

Les Miserables was the last book i read and i haven't yet been able to pick up another. it's one of those books that you have to sit with for awhile. it feels like adultery to move on. it impacts you so deeply, becoming a part of who you want to be. Victor Hugo unites words like no one else. words become poetry instead of sentences, paragraphs become longings instead of chapters. and before you know it how you view life and love is totally flipped upside down and inside out. you can no longer be who you were before you read the book.

i couldn't bring myself to read another until today. my friend Jeremy bought me a copy of a book he hasn't been able to shake to this day, The Boy and the Dog are Sleeping.

"Sometimes I think I am insane.
Why would anyone sane adopt a child with AIDS?
It terrifies me to write this book. I am afraid. I am afraid of dragons.
I am afraid of losing my mind. I want something no one is allowed to have.
I want the mad ones. The children mad enough to struggle and survive. I want the children who have seen war. The children mad enough to question everything. The children who have had everything taken away from them. The children who are broken and mad enough to attempt to repair themselves. The children mad enough to spit and fight. Mad enough to laugh outrageously. Mad enough to make music of their own. Mad enough to see themselves as individuals. I want children who will dance in the rain. I want the mad, crazy ones. I want the ones insane enough to love hard, and brave enough to be vulnerable.
I do not know where this book begins.
I am haunted by deep, electric flashes of music, memories, dragons, and madness."

Dori's Dad

i talked to Dori a couple of days ago and i got an e-mail from her today saying her parents are doing good!

REUNION!

so a few of us are antsy and wanting to go somewhere and all of us are wanting to see everyone again, so let's combine the two and make an adventure of it. with that being said, please make sure you post or leave a comment so everyone can know your thoughts. please answer these two questions:

1. where do you want to meet up?
2. when would you be available?

i'll go first -

1. in no particular order: chicago, prague, jerusalem, somewhere in india, italy, turkey, uk, south america, africa or you are all always welcome in portland!
2. whenever works out with everyone's work / school schedules and finances. i just need to know at least a month in advance so i can request leave.

i love you all so much!
